The most misunderstood character in comics - Part End
Today we shall finish our look at the the King of the "Sucky" Seas ( I mean...awesome) Aquaman!
2003 saw another series for Orim. This one had some serous surprises in store, like in issues 15 through 20, when the city of San Diego, California floods from a tidal wave and its' inhabitants killed or, mysteriously, suddenly able to breathe underwater after developing gills. (Turns out this was a plot by a man named Geist, to save humans from environmental dangers.) Aquaman becomes the ruler of the renamed Sub Diego.
With issue 37, when the Spectre ends up ruining Sub Diego and other parts of Atlantis, Orim has decided he has had enough. The character disappears after the Infinite Crisis after becoming a vessel for something "strange, dark, and terrible", known as the Dweller in the Depths." With a title change to Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis starting with the one year later issue 40, the title of "Aquaman" goes to Arthur Joseph Curry, a man who could breath water due to the experimentation of Geist. This series only lasted to Issue 57. After the events of Blackest Night, the original Aquaman returned. Although he remained a member of the Justice League, he didn't have his own title again until the New 52.
With the entire line rebooted after the Flashpoint mini-series in what was called the New 52, Aquaman returned to his own series. In the beginning he lived in a lighthouse off of Amnesty Bay, Massachusetts, with Mera and a dog. He was also a founding member of the Justice League and fought against Darkseid's invasion of the Earth. He led the Justice League and other heroes in a fight against his brother Orm who usurped his throne in the Throne of Atlantis storyline (which crossed over to Justice League and led to him leaving (briefly) and being replaced by Firestorm, Atomica and Element Woman. Throne of Atlantis has become a DC Animated movie as at this writing. Boston was destroyed during this fight. We also discover that Aquaman was involved with another group of heroes known as the Others. This series lasted throughout the entire time of the New 52 reaching 52 issues, as well as an issue 0, and two issues during Villains month, for both Black Manta and Ocean Master.
Aquaman was one of the many heroes that was part of the Rebirth by DC. The title began as a biweekly but then by issue 13 had become monthly, yet it continues until the time of this writing. Rebirth starts with Aquaman as yet again King of Atlantis, attempting to open diplomatic relations with the rest of the world with the opening of an embassy on the American East Coast. At this point, a rogue faction of Atlanteans end up committing acts of war against the United States. Aquaman spends time trying to diffuse the situation but when the Americans try to assassinate him, he decides that he needs to be quicker. Superman suspends Arthur's membership in the League until the situation clears. Eventually, Aquaman is able to end the war. After the war, Arthur's hold on the throne is precarious and he is yet again overthrown. This time Aquaman appears to be dead...and that's all I'll tell you as I think you should pick up a recent copy and find out for yourself what happens. (Hint: it's surprising)
With the Aquaman movie scheduled to come out for December 21, 2018, I feel that the character deserves better respect than he gets. After all, he has been continuously in print since 1941. I hope you enjoyed my study and essay about the King of Atlantis.
Next up, I will review a random comic from a collection (I'll have my son pick it out so I won't be tempted to just pick one of my favourites.) then I will do another in depth synopsis. This one will be for a Marvel character. And as always, if there is one in particular you would like to see, drop a note in the Comment section.
Ottawa Comic News - I report that the Ottawa Geek Gaming and Garage Sale is scheduled for March 25, 2018 (https://www.facebook.com/events/173554849894318/) from 9 am to 3 pm at the Nepean Sportsplex. Only 2 $ admission and kids under 12 get in free. These are the same guys who run the Geek Market in the fall and they run a fantastic show. I won't be there as it's my daughter's birthday and we have many things planned for her, but I recommend going as this is how we continue to have events in our fair region.
